I never expected to see "convertible" and "gaming laptop" in the same sentence, but here we are. Today (Aug. 21), Acer announced the Nitro 5 spin, a convertible gaming notebook using the new 8th Gen Core processor. It will start at $ 999 when it begins in October.
Acer says the 15.6-inch aluminum laptop offers up to 10 hours of battery life. It includes an FHD screen, a Windows fingerprint reader, up to 512 GB of PCIe SSD and GTX 1050 GPU.
The choice of the new Gen Core 8th Intel processors at this stage is curious because the company only defines its main U series of chips at this stage. Enthusiasm and game level processors arrive later, which means that the system may not have the same performance as expected even in the most popular laptop computers. That being said, most games are related to the GPU, so we will have to see how it resists our testing.
We have never seen a gaming PC, but the Lenovo Yoga 720 15-inch includes a 1050 GPU, so it is not uncommon to have this type of power in convertible. This PC, however, is marketed as productivity, no gaming. It also has a CPU of the HQ series, usually more powerful than a U series.
We will put the Nitro 5 Spin both as a game platform and a convertible in the background when it appears in our labs this fall.
